Le Bar Penelope is one of New York City’s most coveted lounges, a space that feels both seductive and eccentric. The room is wrapped in velvet textures, palm prints, and cheetah accents, with brushstrokes of orange, green, gold, and violet that create a symphony of layered, refined style. It is the perfect setting for a celebration that feels intimate, mature, and unforgettable.
This was no ordinary fortieth birthday. It was a surprise celebration, crafted with care in partnership with the guest of honor’s husband and closest loved ones. Guests were instructed to arrive promptly at seven o’clock, greeted with a Paloma upon entry, one of Melissa’s signature favorites. The air filled with anticipation as everyone waited for the moment she would walk through the door. When she arrived at seven-thirty, the room erupted with emotion. Moments later, a sweeping curtain at the back of the lounge fell to the floor, revealing a saxophonist who immediately captivated the crowd with a smoldering jazz solo.
Renowned New York City band UNLTD! performed throughout the evening, blending R&B and classic rock in a way that felt both nostalgic and effortlessly modern. Guests were encouraged to write “love letters” to Melissa in a keepsake journal, a thoughtful element that allowed friends and family to share memories, blessings, and gratitude.
Surprise parties require meticulous planning, and small gestures like this leave behind something tangible and meaningful for the guest of honor to take with them. In similar fashion, a polaroid camera station offered guests an opportunity to capture candid moments in real time. The sketch artists we sourced with Drawing Booth, drew guests and printed their sketches in real time, creating personal keepsakes, a charming and nostalgic touch.
The culinary experience was exceptional. The menu balanced comfort with sophistication, beginning with passed appetizers such as spicy tuna crispy rice, lamb chop lollipops, and Greek salad skewers. A buffet followed with chili chicken, mushroom pad thai, and miso Chilean sea bass, accompanied by wok-charred brussels sprouts and ginger-glazed baby carrots.
The cake was among the most striking we have commissioned to date. The three-tier raspberry lemon confection was adorned with deep purple florals and delicate gold piping, creating a centerpiece worthy of the occasion. No celebration is complete without late night indulgences. Wagyu sliders, vegetable spring rolls, and truffle fries were offered as the perfect nightcap. The open bar featured premium spirits and imported wines, keeping the atmosphere lively and the dance floor full.
Every detail was intentionally branded in Melissa’s honor, from cocktail napkins and French fry holders to bespoke burger boxes and tissue paper. The florals were a true artistic statement, designed to layer color, sensuality, and texture in a way that symbolized warmth and well wishes for the birthday girl. The lighting cast a soft, hazy glow across the lounge, reminiscent of an exclusive speakeasy known only to insiders.
